HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 492
Commending John Kidd.

WHEREAS, John Kidd retired in 2007 as superintendent of the Rockingham County Public Schools after a long and distinguished career with the school system; and

WHEREAS, John Kidd joined the Rockingham County Public Schools in 1970 after graduating from Virginia Tech; he taught history and math for four years at Broadway High School and in 1974 became an assistant principal at John C. Myers Middle School, now an elementary school; and

WHEREAS, continuing his path as a school administrator, John Kidd next took the reins at McGaheysville Elementary School, where he was principal from 1978 to 1983; he then served as the school district’s director of transportation for four years before returning to work as a principal, this time at Broadway High School, from 1987 to 1990; and

WHEREAS, in 1990 John Kidd moved to the central office, spending a year as the administrative assistant for instruction; he then became assistant superintendent for instruction in 1991 and three years later was named superintendent; and

WHEREAS, John Kidd is known and respected for his sense of fairness and his willingness to consider all sides of an issue with an open mind and for his ability to make tough decisions in order to move the school system forward; at the end of the day, he always has the best interests of students at heart; and

WHEREAS, throughout his career, John Kidd furthered his education, obtaining a master’s degree at James Madison University in 1973, a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from Virginia Tech in 1983, and a doctorate in education at the University of Virginia in 1996; and

WHEREAS, John Kidd has been very involved with professional organizations, including serving as chair of the State Standards of Learning Standard Setting Committee in the area of writing and the Region 5 Superintendents Study Group; he has served as a board member for and president of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents; and

WHEREAS, in his retirement John Kidd continues to serve as an adjunct professor at both James Madison University and the University of Virginia, helping to mold the next generation of educators, and he enjoys having more time to spend with his family, pursue hobbies, and travel; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate John Kidd on his retirement after 37 years of exceptional service to the Rockingham County Public Schools; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Kidd as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement.
