2008 SESSION
WHEREAS, United States Army Staff Sergeant Christopher S. Kiernan died in Iraq on May 6, 2007, while serving his country; and
WHEREAS, born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Staff Sergeant Kiernan moved to Virginia Beach with his family as a small child, attended the Virginia Beach City public schools, and graduated from First Colonial High School in 1988; and
WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Kiernan enlisted in the United States Army in 1990 and became a member of the armored corps; he drove a tank in the front lines of Desert Storm, served in Bosnia, where he was awarded a Purple Heart, and in Haiti and Somalia; and
WHEREAS, a member of the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division based at Fort Hood, Texas, Staff Sergeant Kiernan served in Iraq in 2004 and was awarded a Bronze Star during his first tour of duty; he was deployed to Iraq again in October 2006; and
WHEREAS, known for his generosity and his great concern for his fellow soldiers, Staff Sergeant Kiernan will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife, Donna; his parents, John and Margaret; his grandfather, William; his sister, Kathleen, and his brother, Sean, and their spouses; and many other family members and dear friends; and
WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Kiernan’s death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Staff Sergeant Christopher S. Kiernan; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Staff Sergeant Christopher S. Kiernan as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
