HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 454 Celebrating the life of Sergeant Bruce E. Horner.

WHEREAS, United States Army Sergeant Bruce E. Horner of Newport News died in Iraq on June 1, 2007, while serving his country; and

WHEREAS, a career soldier who had served in the Army for 18 years, Sergeant Horner was a military policeman assigned to the 127th Military Police Company, 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Support Command based in Fliegerhorst, Germany; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Horner was with a group searching for three missing soldiers when the group came under attack; he died in Baghdad of wounds inflicted by enemy small-arms fire; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Horner was very active at Olivet Christian Church in Newport News where he sang in the choir and worked with the youth group; he was a great ambassador for the church, always inviting people to join in worship; and

WHEREAS, known for his larger-than-life personality and his ability to connect with all kinds of people, Sergeant Horner will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Erin, and stepdaughter; his parents, Ed and Betty; and many other family members and good friends; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Horner’s death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Sergeant Bruce E. Horner; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sergeant Bruce E. Horner as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
