HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 428
Commending Trantwood Elementary School.

WHEREAS, Trantwood Elementary School is a recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy award by the Association of Fundraising Professionals' Hampton Roads Chapter; and

WHEREAS, founded in 1963, Trantwood Elementary School of the Virginia Beach City Schools has a student enrollment of about 522 students in kindergarten through fifth grade; and

WHEREAS, the hard-working students of Trantwood Elementary School have repeatedly led the nation in United Way student contributions through the nonprofit’s South Hampton Roads chapter, an umbrella organization that raises funds to support programs within 70 local health and human service agencies; and

WHEREAS, in 1998 Trantwood Elementary School set a national record for student contributions to the United Way by raising nearly $6,000; in 2007, under sponsors Barbara Iman and Carolyne McCoy, students came very close to that record, collecting an amazing $5,558.88 with faculty and staff donating an additional $3,000; and

WHEREAS, the infectious spirit of giving by Trantwood Elementary School is a tribute to the enthusiasm and tireless dedication of the school’s students, faculty, and parents; the leadership of Principal Patricia Slaughter and her administrative staff; and the support of the community of Virginia Beach; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Trantwood Elementary School and its generous and caring students as recipients of the 2007 Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy award by the Association of Fundraising Professionals' Hampton Roads Chapter; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Patricia Slaughter, principal of Trantwood Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the school’s commitment to helping the citizens of Virginia and making a difference in the Virginia Beach community.
