HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 426
Commending the Richmond Council of the U.S. Navy League on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Richmond Council of the United States Navy League celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala event on January 10, 2008; and

WHEREAS, the purpose of the United States Navy League is to educate citizens about the conditions of the naval and maritime forces and their role as integral parts of a sound national defense; and

WHEREAS, the Richmond Council is composed of approximately 700 men and women who are dedicated to fostering interest and cooperation in all matters that may aid, improve, or develop the strength and efficiency of United States maritime forces; and

WHEREAS, the Richmond Council maintains close relations with four ships it has “adopted”—the USS Normandy (CG 60), USCGC Northland (WMEC 904), USS Carter Hall (LSD 50), and USS Nassau (LHA 4)—by staying abreast of the ships’ news and activities when they are deployed, providing packages for crew members, donating entertainment equipment for ships’ quarters, organizing onboard raffles, and welcoming the ships home when they return from deployment; and

WHEREAS, ten ships participate in the Richmond Council’s “deployment dollars” program, whereby service members receive chits that can be redeemed in their ship’s store while on deployment; and

WHEREAS, the Richmond Council is also active in supporting JROTC programs by offering annual awards to participants at local high schools; the Council raises money for its many activities through an annual golf tournament, manning a concession booth during Virginia Commonwealth University basketball games, and other fundraising events; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Richmond Council of the United States Navy League on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Richmond Council of the United States Navy League as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for its outstanding support of the United States maritime forces and best wishes for continued success.
