2008 SESSION
WHEREAS, Samuel H. Rosenblatt, a respected citizen and generous community supporter, died on January 24, 2008; and
WHEREAS, a native of Norfolk, Samuel “Sam” Rosenblatt was a longtime resident of Norfolk and Virginia Beach before retiring to Florida; and
WHEREAS, an officer in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, Sam Rosenblatt flew many missions over Germany and Eastern Europe; on his 15th mission, in February 1945, his B-24 airplane was shot down and he was captured by the Germans and remained a prisoner until the war's end; and
WHEREAS, after the war, Sam Rosenblatt worked as an insurance agent and dedicated much of his life to Jewish causes; in the early 1950s, he and a group of young men established Temple Israel at its present location on Granby Street in Norfolk, and he served as the Temple’s third president; and
WHEREAS, Sam Rosenblatt served as president of the Jewish Community Center of Norfolk and on the board of directors of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater, and he was an active member of the group that helped build the Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia, now Beth Sholom Village, a Jewish residence for the elderly; and
WHEREAS, committed to being a role model for young people and encouraging their personal growth, Sam Rosenblatt dedicated much of his young adult years to the Boys Scouts of America, and he was instrumental in the formation of Troop 17, Norfolk, which he served as the assistant scout master; and
WHEREAS, a devoted and hardworking man, Sam Rosenblatt will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Gertrude; his two sons, Alan and Charles, and their wives; his daughter, Judith; his two granddaughters; his brother and sister-in-law; and many other family members and dear friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Samuel H. Rosenblatt, a fine Virginian; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Samuel H. Rosenblatt as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
