Commending the DuPont James River Plant.

WHEREAS, DuPont was founded in 1802 by an immigrant chemist, E.I. du Pont, at the urging of a citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson; and

WHEREAS, DuPont has adapted to change throughout its 205-year history, and today delivers sustainable, science-based solutions that make real differences in people’s lives around the world in food and nutrition, safety and security, health care, construction, electronics, apparel, and transportation; and

WHEREAS, DuPont has established a global reputation for excellence in safety management, and held fast to its core values of safety and health, fair and respectful treatment of people, professional ethics, and environmental stewardship; and

WHEREAS, in 1947 DuPont established its 450-acre James River Plant off Bellwood Road in Richmond to safely produce sulfuric acid, possibly the most versatile chemical known to man, which is utilized in the manufacture of almost everything essential in our lives, including paper, plastics, soaps, detergents, fertilizer, metals, explosives, alcohols, dyes, clothing, pesticides, medicines, drugs, refrigeration, air-conditioning, and industrial wastewater treatment; and

WHEREAS, the proud employees of the James River Plant play an integral role in DuPont’s production of this product for the manufacture of Kevlar fiber at its Spruance Manufacturing Complex; and

WHEREAS, Kevlar fiber has earned global recognition as a high-performance material, which helps to protect human life, in helmets and body armor used by the military and law-enforcement community, including our fighting forces in Iraq and other areas throughout the globe today; and

WHEREAS, Virginians are proud that the Kevlar fiber produced at the Spruance Manufacturing Complex has evolved over four decades of innovation to do everything from helping to save thousands of lives around the world to making homes, vehicles, and aircraft safer and more energy-efficient, as well as countless other vital uses; and

WHEREAS, the DuPont James River Plant also produces gypsum, which is used in Virginia’s peanut farming industry and in many construction applications; and

WHEREAS, the DuPont James River Plant is an exceedingly safe manufacturing facility, with employee-led safety team efforts and safety audit practices that have resulted in more than 26 years of safe operations without a Lost Workday Case injury and more than 14 years without a Medical Treatment Case occurrence at the plant; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the DuPont James River Plant and its outstanding employees on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of their exemplary facility; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates present a copy of this resolution to the DuPont James River Plant as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for the facility’s commitment to safe operations and its many contributions to the economic growth and prosperity of the Commonwealth and the well-being of its citizens.
