HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 409
Celebrating the life of Louise Towles English.

WHEREAS, Louise Towles English of Altavista, a respected citizen and founder of Faith Christian Academy, died on January 24, 2008; and

WHEREAS, born and raised in Lynchburg, Louise English later moved to Altavista and married the late William Curtis English, a former Altavista town councilman; they were married for 62 years; and

WHEREAS, throughout her life, Louise English gave generously of her time to many community causes and offered financial support to various organizations and institutions; and

WHEREAS, in 1974 Louise English organized a group of friends and neighbors to study the challenges in education on the local and national levels, and as a result, it was decided there was a need for a Christian school in the community; and

WHEREAS, thanks to the determination and support of Louise English and others, Faith Christian Academy was established in 1989 with 36 students in kindergarten through fourth grade; today, the school is growing steadily and teaches students in pre-school through high school; and

WHEREAS, in addition to spending many hours involved in plans for the school’s curriculum and its buildings, Louise English rolled up her sleeves to haul materials and sand desks for the new school; in 2000 the school dedicated the Louise English Library; and

WHEREAS, well-known for her strong Christian faith and unwavering belief in the power of prayer, Louise English was an active and devoted member of First Baptist Church of Altavista and Monte Vista Baptist Church in Hurt; and

WHEREAS, a kind, energetic, and devout woman, Louise English will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her four daughters, Margaret, Joan, Suzanne, and Beverley, and their husbands; her two sisters, Barbara and Nancy; her 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and many other family members and dear friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Louise Towles English, a role model for her community and a fine Virginian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Louise Towles English as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
