Celebrating the life of D. Henry Almond.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 22, 2008
Agreed to by the Senate, February 28, 2008

WHEREAS, D. Henry Almond of Cobbs Creek, a respected citizen who was very active in state and local politics, died on January 22, 2008; and

WHEREAS, born in the community of Red House in Charlotte County to Alma Carwile and William Henry Almond, Henry Almond grew up in Lynchburg and Campbell County and graduated from Rustburg High School; and

WHEREAS, after graduation, Henry Almond went to work for Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. (C & P), where he would spend his entire career, but he left the company during World War II and served courageously as a central fire control gunner on B-29 bombers in India, China, and the Marianas Islands, circumnavigating the globe by plane and ship; and

WHEREAS, following the war, Henry Almond earned a degree in economics from Lynchburg College and then returned to work for C & P; his work in accounting and engineering took him to all parts of Virginia, and he and his family resided at various times in Appomattox, Lynchburg, Culpeper, Winchester, Richmond, and Roanoke; and

WHEREAS, while living in Roanoke, Henry Almond became very active in politics; in 1963 he was elected as one of 11 Republicans to the House of Delegates of Virginia, and in 1965 he ran for a seat in the Senate of Virginia but was defeated by fewer than 200 votes; and

WHEREAS, Henry Almond then devoted himself to working with the Roanoke County Republican Party, and as the party’s county chairman in 1967, he recruited a full slate of candidates for county and legislative offices, and his skillful management of the overall campaign helped elect all but two of them in what The Roanoke Times called “a revolution in courthouse politics”; and

WHEREAS, in 1968 Henry Almond and his family moved to Richmond where he continued his work for C & P (now Verizon) until 1985 when he retired to Cobbs Creek, overlooking the Piankatank River; and

WHEREAS, in addition to politics, Henry Almond had varied interests, including boating, travel, fishing, vegetable gardening, and bridge, and for many years he regularly taught the United States Power Squadron's boating course for the public in Richmond and the Middle Peninsula; more recently, he had led Great Decisions, a discussion group on foreign affairs; and

WHEREAS, an engaging storyteller who loved nothing better than spending time with friends and family, Henry Almond will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 60 years, Patricia Almond; his children, Tacey Dale, Howard Almond, and William Almond, and their spouses; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were the light of his life; and numerous other family members and dear friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a fine Virginian, D. Henry Almond; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of D. Henry Almond as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
