HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 400
Celebrating the life of Joseph A. Johnson.

WHEREAS, Joseph A. Johnson of Abingdon, a respected citizen and devoted community supporter, died December 1, 2007; and

WHEREAS, born in North Carolina to Charles R. and Mollie Honeycutt Johnson, Joseph “Joe” Johnson owned and operated Abingdon Motor Company for many years, retiring in 1973; and

WHEREAS, a capable leader who was committed to public service, Joe Johnson served on the Abingdon town council and as the town’s mayor, and he represented the 2nd District in the House of Delegates of Virginia from 1974 to 1982; and

WHEREAS, Joe Johnson served on a number of local and regional boards, including as a member of the board of directors of Central Fidelity Bank, as chairman of the board of directors of Johnston Memorial Hospital, and as a member of the Virginia Highlands Airport Commission; and

WHEREAS, a charter member of the Abingdon chapter of Kiwanis, Joe Johnson was very active in the organization’s many programs and activities, and he was a longtime member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, where he served numerous terms as an elder; and

WHEREAS, Joe Johnson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his son, Jay Johnson, and his daughter-in-law, Karen; his sister, Gwen, and brothers, Charles and J.P.; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members and dear friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Joseph A. Johnson, a fine Virginian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph A. Johnson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
