089077684WHEREAS, Ruth Overton was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, Inc., with a prestigious 2008 Best of Reston award; and
WHEREAS, the Best of Reston awards were established to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the Reston community and improving the lives of others; and
WHEREAS, with six grown children and seven grandchildren, Ruth Overton has dedicated her life to her family and her beloved community of Reston; and
WHEREAS, with great dedication and enthusiasm, Ruth Overton has been actively involved with the Reston Community Center since first elected to the governing board in 1987, and she has served as board secretary and many terms as an outstanding chairperson; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Overton has made valuable contributions to the Reston Community Center over the years, including developing the center’s booking policies, establishing core programming, creating a reserve fund, and overseeing major renovations; and
WHEREAS, committed to outreach, accessibility, and diversity in Reston Community Center programs and activities, Ruth Overton presided over discussions that led to the establishment of a skate park, development of a second community center, as well as the eventual opening of a new facility at Lake Anne; and
WHEREAS, for more than 30 years, Ruth Overton has been a valued member of the Reston Chorale, where she is a vocalist as well as an officer on the board of directors, grants coordinator, and vice president for corporate development; and
WHEREAS, a tireless worker and able administrator, Ruth Overton has led fundraising and endowment efforts for the Reston Chorale for many years and is actively involved in numerous behind-the-scenes activities, such as planning and organizing concerts, costume selection, and making repertory selections; and
WHEREAS, in 2004 Ruth Overton organized and chaired the Jonathan Myrick Daniels Concert Committee, which raised $80,000 to produce a concert commemorating the personal sacrifice of Jonathan Myrick Daniels during the civil rights protests of the 1960s; and
WHEREAS, in 2007 Ruth Overton chaired the steering committee for a major Reston Chorale concert, “Foundations of Freedom,” which commemorated the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Overton has worked with great energy and dedication to increase the quality of life of her fellow citizens in the Reston community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Ruth Overton on her outstanding service to the residents of Northern Virginia and on her well-deserved honor as a 2008 Best of Reston award recipient; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ruth Overton as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for her efforts on behalf of the community of Reston.
