2008 SESSION
089127744WHEREAS, United States Navy Lieutenant Richard Francis Andersen, Jr., of Virginia Beach died on May 7, 2007, during a training exercise near Fallon Naval Air Station in Nevada; and
WHEREAS, the son of a United States Navy commander, Lieutenant Andersen grew up in Virginia Beach, graduated from Princess Anne High School, and then went on to study at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, following his graduation from the Naval Academy in 2002, Lieutenant Andersen was commissioned an ensign and went to helicopter flight school in Florida; after completing advanced flight training at Naval Air Station Whiting Field, he reported for fleet replacement pilot training in the SH-60F and HH-60H helicopters; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Andersen was assigned to Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Seven, based in Jacksonville, Florida; the squadron is attached to Carrier Air Wing Three, which deploys on the USS Harry S. Truman; and
WHEREAS, in addition to participating in extensive advanced tactical training in undersea and anti-surface warfare, combat search and rescue, and naval special warfare support with his squadron, Lieutenant Andersen served as his squadron’s Legal Officer, Line Division Officer, and Duty Officer; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Andersen received a number of medals and awards during his career, including the Joint Service Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and Navy Battle “E” Award; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Andersen will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his parents, his two sisters, and his brother-in-law, and many other family members and dear friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Lieutenant Richard Francis Andersen, Jr., a courageous and patriotic Virginian; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant Richard Francis Andersen, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
