Celebrating the life of Steven Lowell Nock.

WHEREAS, Steven Lowell Nock of Charlottesville, a beloved and engaging professor of sociology at the University of Virginia, died on January 20, 2008; and

WHEREAS, born and raised in Norfolk, Steven Nock graduated from the University of Richmond in 1972 and earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Massachusetts in 1976; he taught at Tulane University prior to joining the faculty of the University of Virginia’s Department of Sociology in 1978; and

WHEREAS, an enthusiastic and demanding teacher, Steven Nock challenged and inspired his students, and in 1992 he was honored with an All University Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award; and

WHEREAS, an accomplished scholar who studied marriage and family issues, Steven Nock published extensively in professional journals, and his book Marriage in Men's Lives won the 1999 William J. Goode Book Award from the American Sociological Association; and

WHEREAS, Steven Nock was a cofounder of the Center for Children, Families and the Law at the University, had been director of the Marriage Matters project, which studied the legal innovation known as "covenant marriage," and had worked as a consultant on American family policy with the United States Department of Health and Human Services; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his many professional interests and commitments, Steven Nock was very active in local civic and arts organizations; he served on the board of the Thomas Jefferson Area United Way for 25 years, sang with the Charlottesville Peace Choir and the Charlottesville Oratorio Society, and, with Judy Gary, formed the Virginia Consort, a vocal ensemble; and

WHEREAS, a gregarious person with a great sense of humor, Steven Nock was comfortable talking to people in all walks of life and had a genuine interest in what they had to say; he loved landscaping, tinkering with cars and other gadgets, and going for a spin on a motorcycle or in his Corvette; and

WHEREAS, Steven Nock will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 36 years, Daphne Spain; his brother, Bill, and his family; his sister-in-law, Marsha, and her family; and many other family members, friends, colleagues, and former students; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Steven Lowell Nock, a beloved and dedicated University of Virginia professor; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Steven Lowell Nock as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
