HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 368
Commending Sterling Grooms.

WHEREAS, Sterling Grooms of Winchester is recognized for his dedication to the Special Olympics and the sport of powerlifting and his outstanding performance in Shanghai, China, in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, which were held October 2 - 11, 2007, and attended by 7,500 athletes from 160 countries around the world; and

WHEREAS, before an enthusiastic crowd at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in China, Sterling Grooms won three gold medals in the lift, the squat, and in the overall men’s combination lift competitions, and a silver medal in the bench press competition; and

WHEREAS, Sterling Grooms graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, is employed as a cashier for Martin’s Food Store in Winchester, and as a reliable and conscientious employee of the company’s Pleasant Valley Road store, was awarded the Associate of the Year award; and

WHEREAS, Sterling Grooms is an Eagle Scout, and, committed to giving back to his community, he has served as a Global Messenger to promote and increase awareness of Special Olympics programs; and

WHEREAS, Sterling Grooms is a competitive athlete who has been active in Special Olympics activities and events for 22 years, and in 1991 he participated in the Special Olympics World Games in swimming; and

WHEREAS, Sterling Grooms enjoys listening to music, watching movies, roller skating, skiing, bowling, and playing team sports such as softball and basketball; and

WHEREAS, a talented athlete and a shining ambassador for the United States, the Commonwealth, and his hometown of Winchester, Sterling Grooms has a great Olympic spirit and is an exceptional role model for his fellow athletes; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Sterling Grooms on his exemplary Special Olympics powerlifting career and his inspirational performance in Shanghai, China, in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sterling Grooms as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his commitment to the Special Olympics, his fellow athletes, and the sport of powerlifting.
