HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 365 Commending John Thomas.

WHEREAS, John Thomas, the admired and beloved football coach at Colonial Heights High School for 37 years, will retire in 2008; and

WHEREAS, before joining Colonial Heights High School in 1971, John Thomas was the assistant coach and physical education teacher for Bedford High School and Sussex High School; and

WHEREAS, during his distinguished coaching career at Colonial Heights High School, John Thomas served as assistant football coach for nine years and as the school’s physical education teacher and dedicated head coach for 28 years; and

WHEREAS, compiling a record of 98 - 180 - 3 with one of the smallest enrollments of any Group AAA school, John Thomas led his hardworking Colonial Heights High School Colonials football teams to the Central Region playoffs four times, with the most recent being in 2005; and

WHEREAS, in tribute to John Thomas and his excellent career as head coach, many former players surprised their high school coach by attending the Colonials’ final game of the 2007 season; and

WHEREAS, John Thomas also has served as assistant principal for Colonial Heights High School for the past seven years, and he will continue in that position until the end of the 2007 - 2008 school year; and

WHEREAS, John Thomas looks forward to enjoying quality time and new adventures in his retirement with his wonderful wife and family and especially with his four beloved grandchildren; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate John Thomas on his outstanding 37-year career as exemplary coach and teacher at Colonial Heights High School; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Thomas as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his commitment to his players and students at Colonial Heights High School and best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement.
