Commending Special Operator Senior Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Douglas M. Day.

WHEREAS, Special Operator Senior Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Douglas M. Day, United States Navy, was honored on January 11, 2008, with one of the military’s highest awards for heroic actions on the battlefield, the Silver Star; and

WHEREAS, Senior Chief Petty Officer Day, a member of Naval Special Warfare Group Two based in Norfolk, earned the award for his heroic actions in April 2007 in the Fallujah area where his SEAL Team was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom; and

WHEREAS, Senior Chief Petty Officer Day’s exceptional leadership was essential to mission success during a combined helicopter-borne direct action mission to capture a high-ranking member of an insurgent network; and

WHEREAS, though encountering heavy automatic weapons fire from enemy personnel, Senior Chief Petty Officer Day was the first to enter the building from which the enemy was firing; and

WHEREAS, despite being shot 17 times by enemy gunfire, as well as being hit by an enemy grenade and having his service rifle shot out of his hands, Senior Chief Petty Officer Day drew his sidearm and single-handedly continued to engage a numerically superior enemy force, eliminating three enemy insurgents without injury to women and children who were in close proximity; and

WHEREAS, demonstrating decisive leadership and mental clarity in the face of his injuries, Senior Chief Petty Officer Day maintained his fighting posture until ensured of the success of his mission; his bold initiative, undaunted courage, and complete dedication to duty reflect the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service; and

WHEREAS, Senior Chief Petty Officer Day’s actions personify the battle-proven reputation of United States Navy SEALs, who train to decisively win our nation’s conflicts at sea, in the air, or on land and who, along with their families, have endured great losses in the defense of our nation; and

WHEREAS, Navy SEALs selflessly volunteer for the most dangerous military missions across the globe, asking for no recognition other than to be known as silent professionals, and train to the motto “The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday”; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Special Operator Senior Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Douglas M. Day for his extraordinary actions in the preservation of the life and liberty of innocent people and in the defense of our nation; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Special Operator Senior Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Douglas M. Day as an expression of the General Assembly’s deep admiration and respect for his unwavering commitment to serve his country.
