088739744WHEREAS, Seaman Freddie Neal Porter, Jr., United States Navy, died October 11, 2007, during a special warfare exercise that took place in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, a native of Brooklyn, New York, Freddie Porter graduated in June 2005 from Garfield High School in Garfield, New Jersey, and in February 2006, he reported to boot camp at Naval Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, following boot camp, Seaman Porter headed to Storekeeper “A” School at Navy Technical Training Center, Meridian, Mississippi, and in July 2006, he reported to Special Delivery Vehicle (SDV) Team Two at Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Seaman Porter was assigned to SDV Team Two’s Supply Department, where he obtained numerous qualifications, including Second Class Swimmer and Boat Coxswain, as he trained to become a Navy SEAL; and
WHEREAS, a diligent and dedicated sailor with great potential, Seaman Porter’s military decorations include the National Defense Medal; and
WHEREAS, known for his jovial disposition and deep commitment to family and friends, Seaman Porter will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his mother, Cassita M. Massiah; his father, Freddie N. Porter, Sr.; his sisters, Alexia, Corlette, and Jacqueline; his half-sisters, Sophia, Zarria, Alicia, and Dondre; and numerous other family members, friends, and fellow sailors; and
WHEREAS, Seaman Porter’s death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces at home and overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic American, Seaman Freddie Neal Porter, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Seaman Freddie Neal Porter, Jr., United States Navy, as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
