088961536WHEREAS, the town site of Phenix was surveyed in July 1908 by the forward-looking Home Development Company of Farmville, anticipating that the Virginia Railway would pass through the community; and
WHEREAS, a prominent citizen, R. S. Chamberlayne, Jr., helped to establish several successful businesses in Phenix, including Chamberlayne’s Leaf Tobacco Company that shipped its tobacco products overseas from the town and produced numerous jobs in the community; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Railway did build a station in Phenix in 1909, and the railroad ran an excursion train from Roanoke to Norfolk, a popular attraction for young and old alike; and
WHEREAS, Phenix grew and prospered and the citizens built homes, churches and schools, and entrepreneurs, professionals and tradesmen established boarding houses, a bank, medical offices, general stores, garages, blacksmith shops, a planing mill, a flour mill, barber shops, and a cannery; and
WHEREAS, busy and progressive for a small town, Phenix claimed an ax and handle factory, a moving picture show, and the first office of the Charlotte Gazette in 1912; and
WHEREAS, Phenix has changed over time and only three businesses have survived, but the town’s 200 residents enjoy a quiet lifestyle in the town’s beautiful rural countryside and support local musicians and artists, a community swimming pool and library, Farmers Market, Little League Baseball teams, and Boy Scouts of America troops, as well as perennial town events such as the annual Fall Festival and Christmas parade; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Town of Phenix on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Town of Phenix as an expression of the General Assembly's best wishes for a joyful celebration and continued prosperity for the town's citizens in the future.
