WHEREAS, Melanie Norris of Virginia Beach is recognized for her dedication to the Special Olympics and the sport of bowling and her outstanding performance in Shanghai, China, in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, which were held October 2-11, 2007, and attended by 7,500 athletes from 160 countries around the world; and

WHEREAS, before an enthusiastic crowd at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in China, Melanie Norris won a bronze medal in the singles bowling competition, a bronze medal in the doubles bowling competition, and placed 4th in the bowling team competition; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Nansemond River High School, Melanie Norris won a gold medal in bowling at the Virginia state games; she is a dedicated athlete who has been participating in Special Olympics bowling events for four years; and

WHEREAS, Melanie Norris enjoys meeting new people, playing video games, working on the computer, and talking on the telephone; and 

WHEREAS, a gifted athlete and a shining ambassador for the United States, the Commonwealth, and her hometown of Virginia Beach, Melanie Norris has an infectious smile and a sunny disposition, is always willing to help others, and is an exceptional role model for her fellow athletes; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Melanie Norris on her exemplary Special Olympics bowling career and her inspirational performance in Shanghai, China, in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Melanie Norris as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of her commitment to the Special Olympics, her fellow athletes, and the sport of bowling.
