Commending the Strasburg High School girls' volleyball team.

WHEREAS, the 2007 Strasburg High School girls’ volleyball team capped a perfect season by winning the Virginia High School League Group A state volleyball championship on November 17, 2007; and

WHEREAS, the Strasburg High School Rams (28-0) defeated the Gate City High School Blue Devils in five games to win the state title before a jubilant crowd at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, on the way to their first state girls’ volleyball title, the Strasburg High School Rams clinched the Bull Run District championship title and defeated Page County, Appomattox, and Rappahannock high schools to win the Region B tournament; and

WHEREAS, in semifinal play against Grayson County High School, the Rams were down 2-1 after losing consecutive games, when they regained their composure and battled back to win 3-2 and claim their right to play Gate City High School in the finals; and

WHEREAS, in game four of the finals, talented senior Katie Marie Baker made seven straight points, six kills, and a block to inspire her team to victory, and she finished the tournament with 33 kills and 12 blocks and was named Group A State Volleyball Player of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Kaitlin Barr Smoot led the Rams in assists and established a new Group A career record with 2,029 assists and was named The Winchester Star’s 2007 Volleyball Player of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Rebecca Mae Coffman, Stephanie Nicole Conde, Shanna Lorraine Devers, Dara Lynn Dillman, Bethany Marie Doman, Lyndsey Karin Funkhouser, Britanee Dawn Hodson, Justine Renee Owens, Jenna Elizabeth Smoot, Kalyn Diane Warner, Cassidy Page Weitman, and Emily Suzanne Wymer also made valuable contributions in a tremendous team effort in the championship games and throughout the season; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2007 Rams is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Suzanne Mathias, who was named Group A State Volleyball Coach of the Year, and assistant coach Jennifer Mason; and the support of the students, parents, and faculty of Strasburg High School and the community of Strasburg; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the undefeated Rams from Strasburg High School on their perfect 2007 season and their well-deserved Group A volleyball state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Suzanne Mathias as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the championship performance of the 2007 Strasburg High School girls’ volleyball team.
