HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 308
Celebrating the life of W. Barry Lisagor.

WHEREAS, W. Barry Lisagor of Fredericksburg and formerly of Newport News, a respected engineer and a retired associate chief of the NASA Langley Research Center, Materials Division, died after a courageous 13-year battle with cancer on November 28, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Barry Lisagor graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Virginia, in 1957, earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in metallurgical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and served his country in the Virginia National Guard with tours of active duty as a lieutenant in the United States Army and Army Reserve; and

WHEREAS, Barry Lisagor began his career during the space exploration years at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), researching titanium and aluminum alloys used in space and in medical implants, and he was the author of numerous scientific papers, technical articles, books, and patents; and

WHEREAS, Barry Lisagor received national and international recognition while at NASA, conducting research on the synthesis of advanced aluminum and titanium alloys, developing fabrication processes vital to the aerospace industry, visiting and consulting with scientists in Russia, and publishing books and articles that have furthered research in many scientific fields; and

WHEREAS, a brilliant engineer and skilled researcher, Barry Lisagor, after retiring from NASA, was a valuable senior scientist and consultant for Analytical Services & Materials, Inc., (AS&M) in Hampton, a research and engineering firm specializing in advanced technologies; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Barry Lisagor was the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for his many contributions to the science of engineering, including the Francis L. LaQue Memorial Award and the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) International Award of Merit, which is accompanied with recognition as a Fellow of ASTM; and

WHEREAS, Barry Lisagor remained very active in his family, community, and profession until the time of his death, and he will be fondly remembered for his great love of his family, his dedication to science and the well-being of his fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, Barry Lisagor will be greatly missed by his devoted wife, Kathleen Sprenkle Lisagor, and his three children, Amy Burcher, Matthew Lisagor, and Mary Ellen Mathews and their families, especially his seven wonderful grandchildren, Kelly, Meredith, Brett, Hannah, Joshua, Kaitlyn, and Luke; many other family members and friends; and his colleagues in the technical community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of an outstanding Virginian, W. Barry Lisagor; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of W. Barry Lisagor as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
