WHEREAS, Evelyn Aguirre of Fairfax is recognized for her dedication to the Special Olympics and the sport of track and field and her outstanding performance in Shanghai, China, in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, which were held October 2-11, 2007, and attended by 7,500 athletes from 160 countries around the world; and

WHEREAS, before an enthusiastic crowd at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in China, Evelyn Aguirre won a silver medal in the softball throw and placed 4th in the 50M run; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Aguirre, aged 17, attends Fairfax High School and is a competitive athlete who has been participating in Special Olympics track and field events for six years; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Aguirre enjoys listening to music, watching television, and spending time with her family; she has a brother who is also a Special Olympics Virginia athlete; and

WHEREAS, a talented athlete and a shining ambassador for the United States, the Commonwealth, and her hometown of Fairfax, Evelyn Aguirre has a great Olympic spirit and is an exceptional role model for her fellow athletes; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Evelyn Aguirre on her exemplary Special Olympics track and field career and her inspirational performance in Shanghai, China, in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Evelyn Aguirre as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of her commitment to the Special Olympics, her fellow athletes, and the sport of track and field.
