2008 SESSION
WHEREAS, Shannon Beam of Winchester, a senior music major at Shenandoah University, was named Miss Central Virginia 2007; and
WHEREAS, the Miss Central Virginia pageant, a precursor to the Miss Virginia America pageant, supports and promotes intelligent, poised, and highly motivated young women, who wish to make a difference in their community and earn scholarship money to further their education; and
WHEREAS, at just 21 years old, Shannon Beam has already made a significant difference in her hometown by helping to educate students and parents about the dangers of underage drinking; and
WHEREAS, during her reign as Miss Central Virginia, Shannon Beam will continue to reach out to audiences across the state about her platform, “Underage Drinking Prevention: A Collective Responsibility,” at schools, conventions, and community activities and through her involvement with organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Drawing the Line, and Virginia College Parents, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, among her many civic appearances, Shannon Beam was the keynote speaker at the 2007 Loudoun County MADD “Tie One on for Safety” press conference and will be a special guest and sing the national anthem at the upcoming MADD Virginia’s “Strides for Change” in May 2008; and
WHEREAS, Shannon Beam will work toward her goal of becoming Miss Virginia America 2008, promote her personal platform through the Miss America Organization, and increase awareness and raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network; and
WHEREAS, a young woman of intelligence, talent, and dedication, Shannon Beam is an exceptional ambassador for the Commonwealth as Miss Central Virginia; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Shannon Beam on her many achievements and on being crowned Miss Central Virginia 2007; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Shannon Beam as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.
