WHEREAS, Jeffrey C. Dietze, the exemplary director of student activities at West Potomac High School, will retire on February 1, 2008, after 37 years of outstanding service to Fairfax County Schools and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Jeffrey Dietze earned a bachelor's degree in science education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in secondary education from George Mason University, and served his country as a commissioned officer in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, in 1970 Jeffrey Dietze began his distinguished career in education at Groveton High School as a science teacher, department head, and intramural coordinator; he served as director of student activities at Fort Hunt High School from 1975 until 1985 and moved to West Potomac High School when the former two schools were combined; and

WHEREAS, when West Potomac High School was established in 1985, Jeffrey Dietze’s great leadership skills were valuable in helping students, teachers, and the community form a new cohesive school; and

WHEREAS, a knowledgeable administrator with vast experience, Jeffrey Dietze has been a creative and excellent leader at West Potomac High School, a great advisor and mentor to his fellow educators, and a strong advocate for his students; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as director of student activities, Jeffrey Dietze guided coaches as they built exceptional sports teams, and he convinced parents and the community to support West Potomac High School’s many sports programs and activities; and

WHEREAS, as a certified coaching education instructor for over 15 years, Jeffrey Dietze has taught numerous coaches across the state about Virginia’s coaching methods, regulations, and best practices; and

WHEREAS, Jeffrey Dietze has worked with over 17 principals, hundreds of teachers, and thousands of students to develop strong school traditions and expectations of high achievement; and

WHEREAS, always willing to share his knowledge and expertise, Jeffrey Dietze has given his time and immense talents to many professional organizations on the local, state, and national level; he has written articles and made many presentations at civic meetings, education conferences, and other settings to improve the quality of education for all of Virginia’s students; and

WHEREAS, Jeffrey Dietze has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s John C. Youngblood Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 and Athletic Director of the Year award in 1996; the Virginia High School League’s Regional Award of Merit in 2000; the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s State Award of Merit and Distinguished Service Award in 1997; and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s Athletic Director of the Year award nominee for Virginia in 2007; and

WHEREAS, in all of his decisions throughout his 33 years as director of student activities and as a consultant to educators across Virginia, Jeffrey Dietze has considered foremost what is in the best interests of the young people of West Potomac High School and Virginia; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Jeffrey C. Dietze on his 37 years of outstanding service to Fairfax County Schools and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jeffrey C. Dietze as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his many achievements and best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement.
