WHEREAS, Margaret Estes Hupp of Richmond, a respected citizen and outstanding community supporter, died on May 8, 2007; and
WHEREAS, Margaret Estes was born in 1926 in Mecklenburg County, the daughter of Estes Express Lines founder, the late W. W. Estes, and his wife Gladys; she graduated from Chase City High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Mary Washington College in 1947; and
WHEREAS, Margaret Hupp was married for over 59 years to her beloved husband, H. Thomas Hupp, Jr., and the couple lived in Altavista, where she was the head of the commercial department at Altavista High School and taught shorthand, business math, typing, and accounting for four years; and
WHEREAS, Margaret Hupp and her family moved to Richmond in 1959, and she immediately became an enthusiastic supporter of her community; she was active in the parent teacher associations at the schools that her two sons, Billy and Steve, attended, and was a longtime member of the Bon Air Women's Club; and
WHEREAS, always willing to lend a helping hand to her fellow citizens in need, Margaret Hupp was a great supporter of numerous civic organizations and activities in the City of Richmond; and
WHEREAS, a loyal friend with an optimistic outlook on life, Margaret Hupp loved to play golf and bridge and she belonged to a neighborhood bridge club for many years; and
WHEREAS, Margaret Hupp was a faithful member of Bon Air Baptist Church for 47 years, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and
WHEREAS, Margaret Hupp will be fondly remembered for her kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by her sons, William Thomas Hupp and Stephen Estes Hupp, and their wonderful families, especially her grandchildren Will, Charlotte, Rebekah, Stephen, and Thomas; her numerous friends and admirers; and the congregation of Bon Air Baptist Church; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Margaret Estes Hupp; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Margaret Estes Hupp as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
