2008 SESSION
WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Hospital Auxiliary is commended for its 100 years of outstanding service to the University of Virginia Health System, its patients, and the citizens of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the University of Virginia (UVA) Hospital Auxiliary began in October 1908 as the University of Virginia Hospital Circle of the King’s Daughters; and
WHEREAS, in 1927 the UVA Hospital Auxiliary helped provide the hospital with its first full-time social worker; and
WHEREAS, during the Great Depression, dedicated volunteers of the UVA Hospital Auxiliary provided thousands of handmade garments to patients in need; and
WHEREAS, the UVA Hospital Auxiliary members provide patients with countless day-to-day comforts and services, which include maintaining the hospital library, participating in home and hospital visits, delivering flowers, operating the gift shop, distributing toys to children and special t-shirts for newborns, and bringing food and drinks to patients' families and friends; and
WHEREAS, the UVA Hospital Auxiliary volunteers have selflessly worked to help all of the patients of the UVA Health System, especially its young people, some in need of comfort because their parents are serving in the military overseas and others who need a boost to the spirit because they are facing surgery or treatment for a serious disease; and
WHEREAS, since 1955, the UVA Hospital Auxiliary has proudly sponsored 12 scholarships in nursing and other health-related fields, supporting the future development of quality health care providers for Virginia's hospitals; and
WHEREAS, the UVA Hospital Auxiliary supports the operation of Hospitality House, which provides services for families experiencing stress due to hospitalization of a loved one, sponsors the Medi-Mate Emergency Response System, and co-sponsors the Junior Volunteer Program with Volunteer Services; and
WHEREAS, proceeds from Daffodil Day, the holiday tree Lights of Love, the Fall Photography Exhibit, the Spring Mixed Media Art Exhibit, and the Annual Book Sale, as well as sales from the UVA Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop, have helped to fund the many important programs and activities sponsored by the UVA Hospital Auxiliary; and
WHEREAS, since its inception a century ago in 1908, the UVA Hospital Auxiliary, through its many outstanding services and fundraising activities, has helped to meet the diverse needs of patients and their families, and has donated vital supplies and equipment for the well-being of the hospital; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the University of Virginia Hospital Auxiliary on the occasion of its centennial anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the University of Virginia Hospital Auxiliary as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for its outstanding commitment to the University of Virginia Health System, its patients, and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
