2008 SESSION
WHEREAS, Jeanette Lancaster, PhD, RN, FAAN, the Sadie Heath Cabaniss Professor of Nursing at the University of Virginia and Dean of the University’s School of Nursing, is retiring as dean in the summer of 2008; and
WHEREAS, Dean Lancaster is recognized as an international authority on community health nursing, nursing education, and public policy and is a founder of an international organization to support nursing education; and
WHEREAS, president of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and National Academies of Practice, Dean Lancaster has held numerous other leadership positions in professional associations and has been honored nationally with various awards and honorary degrees; and
WHEREAS, Dean Lancaster has served the Commonwealth as a member of the Healthcare Workforce Task Force, has supported new programs that will continue to have a positive impact on the health of all our citizens, and has been an effective advocate for greater support for nursing education by the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Dean Lancaster has led the School of Nursing for nineteen years, during which time the school has improved its national ranking to the point where it stands among the top five percent of nursing schools in the country; and
WHEREAS, Dean Lancaster holds the first endowed nursing professorship in the United States and has been recognized for her innovative efforts to give women at the University of Virginia a more equal role in decision-making; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Dean Jeanette Lancaster for her effective, visionary, and inspiring leadership as Dean of the School of Nursing of the University of Virginia, and for her work in improving health care for all of the citizens of the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dean Jeanette Lancaster as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration of her achievements and gratitude for her commitment, dedication, ability to inspire others, and extraordinary service as Dean of the University of Virginia School of Nursing.
