HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 222 Offered January 15, 2008 Celebrating the life of John T. Fisher, Jr. ----------

WHEREAS, John T. Fisher, Jr., of Portsmouth, a respected citizen and longtime community supporter, died on December 26, 2007; and

WHEREAS, a Portsmouth native, John Fisher was the son of the late Grace Judkins Fisher and John T. Fisher, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, a valuable leader and earnest supporter of the Portsmouth community, John Fisher was the owner of Fisher Funeral Home for more than 60 years; and

WHEREAS, John Fisher graduated from I. C. Norcom High School in 1937 and from Echols School of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia in 1947, and he honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II; and

WHEREAS, a preeminent professional, John Fisher selflessly served his community with dignity and dedication and always treated his fellow citizens with the utmost respect and compassion; and

WHEREAS, committed to making a difference in the lives of others, John Fisher received many accolades for his outstanding service over the years, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand to people in need in the Portsmouth area; and

WHEREAS, John Fisher was a faithful member of Zion Baptist Church for more than 74 years and was a former member of the Young Men Usher Board and active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, John Fisher will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his family and to Portsmouth and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 52 years, Athaline Fisher; his daughter Karen and her husband Glenn; his son Jeffrey and his wife Nicole; his beloved granddaughters Glenia, Jasmine, Jayda, and Justice; his numerous other family members and friends; and the citizens of Portsmouth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine community leader and outstanding Virginian, John T. Fisher, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John T. Fisher, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
