HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 217
Commending Northeast Solite Corporation on the occasion of its 60th anniversary.

WHEREAS, Northeast Solite Corporation, a dynamic Virginia business and leader in the lightweight aggregate industry, is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2007; and

WHEREAS, Solite Corporation was founded by John W. Roberts as the Southern Lightweight Aggregate Corporation in 1947; and

WHEREAS, Solite Corporation began its operations by building and purchasing plants mainly in Virginia and North Carolina, producing a lightweight aggregate product that was replacing cinder in the manufacture of block needed to construct buildings, and other major concrete projects in the Commonwealth and across the eastern United States; and

WHEREAS, Northeast Solite Corporation was formed to supply Solite to all eleven  northeastern states and has become known for its many innovative products, such as Solarblock, which is used to modulate home temperature; Kenlite, which is used in soil fill and masonry units; and Hydrocure, which reduces shrinkage and increases the strength in concrete; and

WHEREAS, now an international corporation, Northeast Solite's Hermitage Road office in Richmond is the center for research, development, and promotion of the company's durability enhancing concrete component Hydrocure, which is manufactured in plants in Kentucky and New York for shipment throughout the United States and abroad; and

WHEREAS, since the 1950s and before the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, Northeast Solite Corporation has served as an industry model of environmental responsibility for companies across Virginia and the nation; and

WHEREAS, for 60 years, Northeast Solite Corporation has strived to provide the most cost effective, technologically advanced, and ecologically responsible construction materials for thousands of projects in Virginia and elsewhere on the east coast, including the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Virginia State Library, MCV Campus Parking Structure, the Diamond, University of Virginia Hospital, Newport News City Hall, Boulevard Bridge, Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital, and James River Plaza; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Northeast Solite Corporation has created numerous jobs in Virginia, and has contributed to the growth, development, and economic stability of many Virginia communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Northeast Solite Corporation on the occasion of its 60th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John W. Roberts, the board chairman of Northeast Solite Corporation, as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of the company's many accomplishments and best wishes for future success.
