2008 SESSION
086987436WHEREAS, the North Tazewell Lions Club was chartered on November 26, 1957, by the International Association of Lions Clubs, and the original charter was signed by 30 local business and community leaders who worked diligently to make sure that the new club started on a sound foundation; and
WHEREAS, the North Tazewell Lions Club was sponsored by the Tazewell Lions Club, and together they have served the greater Tazewell community by sponsoring a very popular variety show for many years; and
WHEREAS, one of the early projects of the North Tazewell Lions Club was to raise funds to build an Olympic-sized swimming pool for the community, which is still used today, and is utilized as a training facility for area championship swim teams; and
WHEREAS, the North Tazewell Lions Club has sponsored the North Tazewell Lioness Club, Bishop Lions Club, Southwest Virginia Community College Lions Club, Boy Scout Troop 93, Boys and Girls State, and Tazewell Little League Baseball; and
WHEREAS, to raise funds for its many worthwhile projects, the North Tazewell Lions Club holds a community breakfast several times a year, and residents always look forward to good food and fellowship at this festive event; and
WHEREAS, over the years, the North Tazewell Lions Club members have enthusiastically raised funds by sponsoring horse shows, rodeos, beauty pageants, and white cane days; distributed a community calendar; and conducted the sale of mops and brooms, Christmas trees, light bulbs, candy mints, fruit cakes, and Halloween candy; and
WHEREAS, the vital funds raised by the North Tazewell Lions Club help citizens in need by providing hundreds of pairs of eyeglasses, photo screening for over 5,000 children, hearing aids, aid devices for the sight- and hearing-impaired, guide dogs for the blind, as well as assisting at the food bank, building a community playground, and sponsoring many other activities; and
WHEREAS, the hard-working and dedicated members of the North Tazewell Lions Club participate in health screenings, park cars and direct traffic at community events, clean up the river, cut and deliver firewood to the elderly, help organize town parades, work with school children, assist in home repairs for the elderly, deliver food and supplies to flood victims, work at the food pantry or thrift store, aid the hearing and sight impaired, deliver Christmas baskets, and provide exemplary models of good neighbors in the community; and
WHEREAS, the North Tazewell Lions Club has been served by 46 exceptional club presidents during its 50-year history and can claim five outstanding state leaders of the Lions of Virginia from its membership: distinguished Governors Al Torrence, Ben Barringer, Dan Bowling, David Morrison, and Jan Bowling, who also served as chair of the Lions of Virginia State Council; and
WHEREAS, the North Tazewell Lions Club has provided elected leaders for Lions Club-sponsored organizations statewide, such as J.C. Ireson, who served as president of the Eye Bank of Virginia, and more recently, Dan Bowling and Jan Bowling, who both served as president of the Lions of Virginia Foundation and the Lions of Virginia Hearing Research Foundation; and
WHEREAS, the North Tazewell Lions Club has been committed to the well-being of the greater Tazewell community and its citizens for 50 years and provides a shining model of humanitarian aid and compassion for service organizations across the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the North Tazewell Lions Club on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the North Tazewell Lions Club as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for its outstanding service and best wishes for continued success in the future.
