HOUSE BILL NO. 917 AMENDMENT IN THE NATURE OF A SUBSTITUTE (Proposed by the House Committee for Courts of Justice on February 1, 2008) (Patron Prior to Substitute--Delegate Joannou) A BILL to amend and reenact § 17.1-209 of the Code of Virginia, relating to preservation of papers in clerk's office.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1.  That § 17.1-209 of the Code of Virginia is amended and reenacted as follows:

§ 17.1-209. Preservation of papers in clerk's office.

All papers lawfully returned to, or filed in, the clerk's office shall be preserved therein until legally delivered out., and shall not be destroyed, even if reproduced electronically, except as provided for in § 17.1-213 or as otherwise permitted by law.
