Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding in Article 2 of Chapter 10 of Title 56 a section numbered 56-245.1:2 as follows:
§ 56-245.1:2. Customers to be notified of renewable power options.
Each investor-owned electric utility in the Commonwealth shall include in each monthly billing statement to each individual retail customer a notice providing information regarding the options of the customer to purchase electric energy provided 100 percent from renewable energy sources from the utility or from any supplier of electric energy licensed to sell retail electric energy within the applicable service territory, pursuant to subdivision A 5 of § 56-577. The notice shall include instructions for a reasonably simple process by which a customer may exercise his option to purchase electric energy from renewable sources from the utility or other licensed supplier of electric energy. The option shall be exercisable, at the customer's option, by Internet connection, by telephone, or by mail.
2. That the provisions of this act shall become effective on January 1, 2009.
