SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 506
Celebrating the life of James Woodrow Wilkerson.

WHEREAS, James Woodrow Wilkerson of Finchley, a respected citizen and outstanding community supporter and public servant, died on February 6, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Woodrow Wilkerson was born on January 3, 1932, learned all about life’s intricacies and abundance through his rich life and experiences, and bravely served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, Woodrow Wilkerson served as supervisor of transportation for Mecklenburg County Public Schools for 21 years and as justice of the peace and magistrate for Mecklenburg County for 38 years; and

WHEREAS, committed to quality public services and protecting his fellow residents, Woodrow Wilkerson was a member of the Mecklenburg County Life Saving and Rescue Squad for 20 years and served as its exemplary captain for 13 years; and

WHEREAS, Woodrow Wilkerson served for eight years on the Virginia State Transportation Safety Board and as chairman of the Health and Safety Committee for the local American Red Cross Chapter, Multi-Disciplinary Team; and

WHEREAS, Woodrow Wilkerson made a difference in the lives of countless people in Mecklenburg County and his first concern was to help his neighbors and individuals in the Finchley community who were less fortunate than he; and

WHEREAS, Woodrow Wilkerson was a faithful member of the Nelson Baptist Church and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, a man of honor and integrity, Woodrow Wilkerson will be fondly remembered for his kind and compassionate nature and his selfless desire to help others in need and greatly missed by his devoted wife, Mildred; his four children, Jim, Mike, Andy, and Trisha; his seven grandchildren; and numerous other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine community benefactor and an outstanding Virginian, James Woodrow Wilkerson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James Woodrow Wilkerson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
