SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 488 Commending Phillip Earl Morris, Jr.   Agreed to by the Senate, February 8, 2007 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 16, 2007  

WHEREAS, Phillip Earl Morris, Jr., retired in February 2007 after serving nine years as head coach of the College of William and Mary ice hockey club team, guiding the ice hockey program from its infancy into a legitimate and competitive collegiate program; and

WHEREAS, Phillip Morris was raised in Pennsylvania, graduated from Old Dominion University, and served two tours on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise after enlisting in the Navy; and

WHEREAS, a gifted writer, Phillip Morris has worked as a newspaper writer, an army public affairs officer, and a historical interpreter for a museum; and

WHEREAS, Phillip Morris’ great passion is ice hockey and he developed his skills as a coach while living in Massachusetts where he coached in the Leominster Youth Hockey Association for 20 years and organized learn-to-skate programs for young skaters; and

WHEREAS, Phillip Morris became coach of the William and Mary ice hockey team in 1998 when the club team was just establishing itself, and highlights of his nine years at the helm include placing third in the Leatherneck Invitational Tournament at the United States Naval Academy in 1999 and going (10–0) in the 2000–2001 season when the team won the Dan Cup in North Carolina, defeating Wake Forest, Clemson, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and

WHEREAS, a resident of Virginia Beach, Phillip Morris is very involved in his community, and currently serves on the board of directors of the PortAlliance Federal Credit Union and has been a member of the Linkhorn Park Civic League for nine years; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Phillip Earl Morris, Jr., for his many years of service to the College of William and Mary, his community, and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Phillip Earl Morris, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his years of dedication to the College of William and Mary ice hockey program and the many players he has coached.
