Celebrating the life of Earl Nickoll Levitt.

WHEREAS, Earl Nickoll Levitt of Williamsburg, a respected businessman and a great friend of Virginia’s war veterans, died on July 7, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Earl Levitt grew up in New York City, graduated from George Washington High School in 1936, where he lettered in swimming, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1940; and

WHEREAS, Earl Levitt was drafted into the United States Army in March 1941, assigned to the 68th Medical Regiment as a staff sergeant, completed officer candidate school, and rose to the rank of first lieutenant in the Tank Destroyers; and

WHEREAS, to his eternal regret, his military career was ended in 1943 by an eye injury, but his loyal service in World War II with the Tank Destroyers inspired him to help other veterans throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, Earl Levitt was a tireless and keen entrepreneur, and he and his wife Maxine opened Earl N. Levitt Men’s Clothiers in Lexington, Virginia, offering classic but unusual clothing; the store eventually opened successful branches in Richmond, Norfolk, and Williamsburg; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the clothing business, Earl Levitt created a unique company called Regimentals, which specialized in British militaria; and

WHEREAS, Earl Levitt was an intensely proud American, who did all he could to support veterans in Virginia as an active member and volunteer with the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, organizing Memorial Day ceremonies and other activities and visiting with fellow veterans; and

WHEREAS, Earl Levitt was devoted to his community of Williamsburg, supportive of his friends and neighbors, and active in numerous civic activities; and

WHEREAS, Earl Levitt enjoyed tennis and lawn bowling and was a founder of the Williamsburg Lawn Bowling Club, which still plays at the Williamsburg Inn; and

WHEREAS, Earl Nickoll Levitt will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his son, Bruce, and daughter, Brook; his beloved grandsons, great-grandsons, and other family members, and his numerous loving friends and fellow veterans; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an American patriot and outstanding Virginian, Earl Nickoll Levitt; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Earl Nickoll Levitt as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
