2007 SESSION
076458724WHEREAS, 2007 marks the 200th anniversary of the County of Nelson, an event that will be commemorated throughout the year; and
WHEREAS, in 1807, Nelson County was formed by an act of the General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, the County of Nelson was named for the third governor of the Commonwealth, Thomas Nelson, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, by the end of the 1800s, Nelson County’s agricultural products included tobacco, apples, and chestnut trees, and the produce and lumber were carried to market by canal and railroad; and
WHEREAS, during the 1930s, Earl Hamner, Jr., began writing of his experiences growing up in Nelson County during the Depression and his writings eventually provided the substance for The Waltons television series; and
WHEREAS, in 1969, Hurricane Camille caused a flood, devastating Nelson County, and events that have aided in the recovery include the 1972 development of Wintergreen Resort, restoration in progress at Oak Ridge Estate, development of Walton’s Mountain Museum, resurgence of the apple industry, burgeoning of the winery industry, and steady growth in Nelson County’s tourism industry; and
WHEREAS, through two centuries, Nelson County has prospered, benefiting from its boundaries of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the James River and the many area attractions that residents and visitors enjoy; and
WHEREAS, as it celebrates it bicentennial, the County of Nelson can reflect with pride on its 200 years of history and look forward with anticipation to a bright future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the County of Nelson and its citizens on the occasion of its 200th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to representatives of the County of Nelson as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for a joyous celebration in 2007.
