WHEREAS, Joe G. Langston was honored at the I.C. Norcom High School homecoming festivities on October 13, 2006, when the Joe G. Langston Stadium was dedicated in his honor; and

WHEREAS, in college, Joe Langston was a stellar linebacker for Norfolk State University, where he served as captain of the football team in his junior and senior years; he went on to play for the Charlestown Rockets in the Continental Football League and the Norfolk Neptunes; and

WHEREAS, Joe Langston started his coaching career at S.H. Clarke Junior High School and transferred to Woodrow Wilson High School before coming to I.C. Norcom High School in 1974; and

WHEREAS, Joe Langston retired as the football coach of the I.C. Norcom High School Greyhounds on June 15, 2001, after 27 years of outstanding service to the Portsmouth Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, Joe Langston compiled an extraordinary career record of 204–76; he guided the Greyhounds to the Virginia High School League Group AAA Division 5 state title in 1993, the Eastern Regional title in 1968 and 1993, and the district title in 1974, 1982, 1992, 1993, 1996, and 2001; the team made 12 appearances in the Eastern Regional championship game under his tutelage; and

WHEREAS, during the course of his distinguished coaching career, Joe Langston was a tremendous mentor to young people, and his moral guidance and support were invaluable in the acceptance of over 200 of his athletes to major colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, the winningest coach in I.C. Norcom High School history and the City of Portsmouth, Joe Langston received numerous accolades and awards, including being named the district Coach of the Year on four occasions and the coveted Virginia Coach of the Year in 1993; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Joe G. Langston on the occasion of the dedication of Joe G. Langston Stadium during the I.C. Norcom High School homecoming festivities on October 13, 2006; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Joe G. Langston as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his many achievements and his dedication to the young people of Portsmouth.
