WHEREAS, Harold Nelson Wood of Harrisonburg, a respected citizen and an admired retired colonel, died on February 11, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Harold Wood was born on February 18, 1919, in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Edith and Harold Wood, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, Harold Wood earned an undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and after deciding on a career in the military, he completed the United States Army Transportation School, as well as the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Economics and National Security; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Wood served his country in World War II in China, Burma and India, and performed his patriotic duty in the Korean and Vietnam Wars; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Wood was a co-founder of the Army’s LACV-30 and a life member of the Law Enforcement Alliance of America; and

WHEREAS, after a distinguished 27-year career in the military, Colonel Wood retired on March 31, 1967, but served as an Army civilian officer until 1980; and

WHEREAS, before moving to Harrisonburg, Colonel Wood volunteered at Williamsburg Hospital and the National Park Service in Yorktown; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Wood was a member of the Harrisonburg Kiwanis Club and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National Association for Uniformed Services, and the China-Burma-India Veterans Association; and

WHEREAS, Harold Wood was a faithful member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Harrisonburg and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, a kind and generous friend and devoted family man, Colonel Wood will be fondly remembered for his generosity and his enjoyment of hunting, fishing, and studying American Civil War history; and

WHEREAS, Harold Wood will be greatly missed by Jane, his beloved wife of 60 years; his son Donald, daughter Patricia, their families, and especially his two wonderful grandsons; and his numerous other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an American patriot and fine Virginian, Harold Nelson Wood; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Harold Nelson Wood as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
