SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 336
Celebrating the life of Karen Hackney.

WHEREAS, Karen Hackney, aged 39, a respected citizen and an admired Vienna community leader, died on September 16, 2006; and

WHEREAS, a native of Berlin, New Hampshire, Karen Hackney was born on October 30, 1966, graduated from Fort Collins High School in Colorado, and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Denver; and

WHEREAS, Karen Hackney moved to Northern Virginia in 1990 and to Vienna in 1998 and immediately became an active and dedicated member of the community; and

WHEREAS, in 2003, Karen Hackney married her beloved husband, Bert, and the couple had a beautiful 20-month-old daughter, Charlotte; and

WHEREAS, an industrious and organized administrator, Karen Hackney was a dedicated employee of MCI in Colorado and Virginia for more than 15 years, and she generously gave her time and well-honed business sense to help improve the quality of life of her neighbors in Vienna; and

WHEREAS, possessing unlimited energy, fervor, and an infectious smile, Karen Hackney was the manager and driving force of the 2006 Vienna Farmers’ Market, making it bigger and better than it had been in previous years; and

WHEREAS, Karen Hackney was a founding member and first president of the Vienna Jaycees, a volunteer photographer for the Vienna Senators, and a representative on the Vienna-Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce Non-Profits Committee; and

WHEREAS, Karen Hackney will be fondly remembered as a wonderful mother and wife and sorely missed by her loving family, her numerous friends, fellow Jaycees, and the customers, vendors, and friends of the market; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a great community supporter and outstanding Virginian, Karen Hackney; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Karen Hackney as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
