SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 311
Celebrating the life of Bishop Lewis E. Hines.

WHEREAS, Bishop Lewis E. Hines of Norfolk, respected citizen and beloved spiritual leader, died on April 12, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Lewis Hines was born in Norfolk on September 14, 1932, to the late Thomas and Geneva Hines; and

WHEREAS, Bishop Hines graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and earned an undergraduate degree from Norfolk State University and a divinity degree from the International Bible Seminary in Florida; and

WHEREAS, an extremely generous and active participant in his community, Bishop Hines devoted his life to others and his church; and

WHEREAS, Bishop Hines will be fondly remembered for his exemplary spiritual leadership and greatly missed by his wife of 51 years, LaVerne Octavia; his two daughters, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; his brother and numerous other loving family members and friends; and the congregation of the Way of the Cross Church in Norfolk; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine pastor and outstanding Virginian, Bishop Lewis E. Hines; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Bishop Lewis E. Hines as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
