073856268WHEREAS, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) was founded on April 30, 1889, and granted a charter by an act of Congress 100 years ago on June 9, 1906; and
WHEREAS, the charter was signed by President Theodore Roosevelt, himself a member of the Sons of the American Revolution; and
WHEREAS, SAR was conceived as a fraternal and civic society composed of lineal descendants of the men who wintered at Valley Forge, signed the Declaration of Independence, fought in the battles of the American Revolution, served in the Continental Congress, or otherwise supported the cause of American independence and claims 16 American presidents as proud members of the organization; and
WHEREAS, the charter of SAR describes the objects and purposes of the Society as ". . . patriotic, historical and educational," and it is charged with perpetuating the memory of the men who, by their services or sacrifices during the war of the American Revolution, achieved the independence of the American people; and
WHEREAS, SAR is also dedicated to inspiring its members and the community at large with a more profound reverence for the principles of the government founded by our forefathers and to encourage historical research about the American Revolution; and
WHEREAS, SAR has a long record of accomplishments in teaching about the Revolutionary War and the patriots who gained the nation's freedom during the War of Independence, and the organization advances its mission through commemorations of battles and events that occurred during this important period of America's history; and
WHEREAS, SAR devotes a great deal of its time, energy, and resources to working with children, so that they might have a better understanding of the history of the United States; and
WHEREAS, SAR is currently working to establish a Center for Advancing America’s Heritage, adjacent to its national headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, SAR’s almost 27,000 members are organized into chapters throughout the 50 states and the District of Columbia and in several foreign countries that helped the American colonies gain their freedom; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution is the Commonwealth’s organization affiliated with the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; and
WHEREAS, SAR is strengthened by the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and its local chapters, including the Rockbridge Volunteers; and
WHEREAS, the local chapters of the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution participate in SAR's many activities, are valuable partners of the SAR in its patriotic mission, and greatly enhance the educational components of the organization; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution on the occasion of the l00th anniversary of its historic charter; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to representatives of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation for their continuing efforts to promote the commemoration of and educate citizens about America’s Revolutionary War.
