2007 SESSION
WHEREAS, Mike Oliver, an exceptional community volunteer, was named 2006 Citizen of the Year by the Alexandria Times; and
WHEREAS, Mike Oliver and his wife, Linda, moved to Alexandria in 1965, and in the early 1970s, they became involved, through the Church of St. Clement, in Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically, an organization that collects food, clothing, and furniture for people in need; and
WHEREAS, with two daughters in the Alexandria City Public Schools, Mike Oliver served as a PTA president four times, twice at George Washington Middle School and twice at Minnie Howard School, and he was a soccer coach and active member of the band boosters at T.C. Williams High School; and
WHEREAS, one of Mike Oliver's favorite volunteer activities, which he has done for the past 16 years, is dressing up as Santa Claus on Christmas morning to deliver gifts bright and early to children staying in the city's homeless shelters; and
WHEREAS, Mike Oliver played a key role in planning Alexandria's 250th birthday festivities in 1999 and is a member of the George Washington birthday celebration committee; and
WHEREAS, after more than 30 years as a student financial aid administrator with the United States Department of Education, Mike Oliver retired in 2000; he is active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and in 2006 led the association's fundraising efforts for Alzheimer's research; and
WHEREAS, Mike Oliver has also been a strong supporter of Friends of the Alexandria Mental Health Center, lending his time and energy to raise funds to help clients pay for items not covered by federal, state, or local dollars; and
WHEREAS, the epitome of a good neighbor, Mike Oliver has devoted himself to making life a little better for his fellow citizens, believing that "sweat equity" can be as valuable as writing a check; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Mike Oliver for being named the Alexandria Times' 2006 Citizen of the Year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mike Oliver as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his many years of outstanding service to the citizens of Alexandria and the Commonwealth.
