WHEREAS, Carol Marie Gilbert is a dedicated and experienced surgeon and emergency medicine expert in Roanoke; and
WHEREAS, Carol Gilbert received her medical degree from the University of California, Davis, in 1978 and did a surgical residency at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon, from 1978 to 1983; and
WHEREAS, after completing a fellowship in traumatology/critical care at the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services in 1984, Dr. Gilbert moved to Roanoke to work at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gilbert joined the staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital as Director of Trauma Services, a position she held until 2002, and Assistant Director of Surgical Education, a position she still holds; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gilbert is also Medical Director for Emergency and Disaster Preparedness for Carilion Health System, Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and from 1993 to 2006, she served as the Medical Director for Virginia's Office of Emergency Medical Services; and
WHEREAS, a leader in the field of emergency medical services, Dr. Gilbert has served as medical director for the Roanoke City Fire-EMS Department, the Roanoke County Fire and Rescue Department, Mount Pleasant First Aid Crew, and Carilion Patient Transport Services, and she was chairman of the State Office of Emergency Medical Services' Advisory Board from 1988 to 1992; and
WHEREAS, throughout her exemplary career, Dr. Gilbert has been involved with many professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, Virginia Chapter, which she served as president in 2001–2002; the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma; and the Air Medical Physician Association; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gilbert is committed to increasing her knowledge and improving her skills and sharing her knowledge and experience with others, and to that end she has authored numerous scholarly articles and participated in numerous conferences and symposia; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gilbert has been recognized for her contributions as a teacher and EMS expert with several awards, including the Governor's Award for Excellence in Emergency Medical Services (2002) and the Outstanding Faculty award voted by the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital house staff (1988), and in 1988 she was named Outstanding Operational Medical Director by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Carol Marie Gilbert for her many years of outstanding service as a surgeon and emergency medical services expert in Roanoke and the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Carol Marie Gilbert as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her many accomplishments.
