Celebrating the life of Bernard Zwinak.

WHEREAS, Bernard Zwinak of Gloucester County, a respected citizen and outstanding community supporter, died on November 20, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Bernard “Bernie” Zwinak positively impacted the lives of numerous people through his hard work, creative thinking, and dedication and service to the Gloucester community; and

WHEREAS, Bernie Zwinak retired to Gloucester County after an exemplary and varied career, starting with service in the United States Navy and followed by work as an Air Force mechanic, a fire department chief, and a civil defense director; and

WHEREAS, the highlight of Bernie Zwinak’s career was his dedicated service as administrative assistant to five consecutive presidents of the American Federation of Government Workers/AFLCIO; and

WHEREAS, in retirement, Bernie Zwinak generously continued to donate his time and talents in service to his country and his community by participating in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and serving two terms on the Gloucester County Board of Equalization; and

WHEREAS, knowledgeable regarding public issues and the political system, Bernie Zwinak was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 2000, chair of the Gloucester County Democratic Committee, and a leader in the First District Democratic Committee and the State Central Committee from 1998 to 2005; and

WHEREAS, Bernie Zwinak will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife of 56 years, Gloria Mae Zwinak; his loving family, friends, and colleagues; and his fellow citizens in Gloucester County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a community servant and outstanding Virginian, Bernard Zwinak; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Bernard Zwinak as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
