WHEREAS, Coach Norman G. Lineburg of Radford, a distinguished community leader of strength and character, has retired from 47 years of coaching football; and

WHEREAS, Coach Lineburg began his commitment to students through his football coaching career at Andrew Lewis High School in Salem; and

WHEREAS, the football programs and students at both William Byrd High School in Salem and Fieldale-Collinsville High School (now Middle School) in Collinsville benefited greatly from Coach Lineburg’s guidance; and

WHEREAS, Coach Lineburg spent the next 36 years making a genuine difference in the lives of our youth as he coached the Radford High School Bobcats; and

WHEREAS, a two-time Virginia state championship coach, Coach Lineburg was inducted into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame in 1996; and

WHEREAS, in 2004 the Norman G. Lineburg field was named inside the Radford High School Bobcat Stadium; and

WHEREAS, Coach Lineburg won 315 out of the 484 football games that he coached throughout his career and the number of football game wins under Coach Lineburg’s direction remains the second most for any in the Virginia High School League; and

WHEREAS, in his 45 years as a head coach, Coach Lineburg has coached more games than any other coach in Virginia High School League history; and

WHEREAS, in 2007 the Radford High School Booster Club organized a scholarship in honor of Coach Lineburg; and

WHEREAS, following his final football game as head coach for Radford High School, Applebee’s Restaurant named Coach Lineburg as its “Hometown Hero” for the tremendous difference that he has made within the Radford community and beyond; and 

WHEREAS, the Radford community has recognized Coach Lineburg as “the area’s most respected and most revered coach on any level”; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with respect and admiration the leadership of Coach Norman G. Lineburg; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Norman G. Lineburg as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his athletic leadership and commitment to the educational and extra-curricular activities of our youth.
