HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 837
Commending Nancy Lee Martin.

WHEREAS, Nancy Lee Martin was crowned Ms. Virginia Senior America 2006 on June 10, 2006, and also won the pageant's Community Service award for her years of volunteer work with the East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad; and

WHEREAS, Senior America, Inc., is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to encourage today's seniors to seek personal growth through continuing education and community service, and the Ms. Senior America Pageant honors women who have reached the "Age of Elegance" by showcasing gracious women who exemplify the dignity, maturity, and inner beauty of all senior Americans; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Lee Martin was born in Fluvanna County and is a true southern lady, with ancestral roots going back to 1619 in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Lee Martin attended the University of Richmond, was a buyer for Miller & Rhoads Department Store, and worked for many years at Wachovia Bank, from which she retired; she also has experience as a landscape design consultant and a national flower show judge; and

WHEREAS, with a generous spirit and abundant energy, Nancy Lee Martin has devoted herself to a wide range of volunteer activities through such organizations as the Order of the Eastern Star of Virginia, William Byrd Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, Pamunkey River Garden Club, Genealogical Research Institute of Virginia, and Fluvanna County Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Lee Martin is most passionate about her work with the East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad, where she has held a number of positions over the past 18 years and currently serves as a dispatcher, training and overseeing new dispatchers; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Lee Martin is equally committed to the East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary, which she currently serves as president; and

WHEREAS, an accomplished singer, Nancy Lee Martin began singing at a young age and performed with a number of popular bands in the Richmond area before she married; after she was widowed in 1993, she returned to singing professionally, joining a gospel bluegrass band and making other appearances; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Lee Martin believes in giving back to society whether through volunteering with community organizations or by sharing her musical talent with others; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Nancy Lee Martin on being crowned Ms. Virginia Senior America 2006; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nancy Lee Martin as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her commitment to serving others and improving the lives of her fellow citizens.
