2007 SESSION
076446232WHEREAS, claiming its third perfect season in school history, St. Anne’s-Belfield High School Saints (11-0) of Charlottesville captured the Virginia Independent Schools Football Association (VISFA) Division 2 state championship by defeating Christchurch 21-10; and
WHEREAS, in a hard-fought game, sophomore Howie Long connected with senior Brian Linthicum on a 42-yard completion that put the Saints on the Christchurch six-yard line and senior Colin Pehanick then ran untouched into the end zone to give St. Anne’s-Belfield a 7-3 lead at halftime; and
WHEREAS, after a scoreless third period, Christchurch took the lead with a touchdown with less than 11 minutes remaining in the game, but the Saints battled back with a 10-play, 80-yard drive that took almost five minutes; and
WHEREAS, with a little over a minute to go, Christchurch threw an interception into the hands of junior Chris Mereen, who made a 30-yard run to put the Saints in position to seal a fifth VISFA Division 2 state title win; and
WHEREAS, Colin Pehanick rushed for 239 yards and scored two touchdowns, including the three-yard score on 4th-and-goal in the final quarter that ended up being the game clincher; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2006 St. Anne’s-Belfield football team is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach John Blake and his staff; and the support of the students and faculty of St. Anne’s-Belfield; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Saints from St. Anne’s-Belfield High School on their outstanding 2006 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach John Blake as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the championship performance of the 2006 St. Anne’s-Belfield High School football team.
