HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 750 Offered January 15, 2007 Commending the Richlands High School football team. ---------- Patrons-- Bowling; Senator: Puckett ----------

WHEREAS, the Richlands High School football team won the Virginia High School League Group AA, Division 3 state championship on December 9, 2006, by defeating Rockbridge County High School, 29-28; and

WHEREAS, the win was the perfect ending to a perfect season for the Richlands Blue Tornadoes, who finished with a 14-0 record and their first state football title since 1992; and

WHEREAS, the Blue Tornadoes, of Tazewell County, started off strong and led 20-6 late in the first half, but then Rockbridge County rallied and scored three touchdowns to make the game a nailbiter; and

WHEREAS, challenged more than they had been all season, the Blues dug deep and came up with an impressive 11-play, 58-yard touchdown drive with 11 minutes to go in the game; and

WHEREAS, to secure the win, the Blue Tornadoes needed two dramatic plays in the final two minutes; senior Brett Clayburne blocked a field goal attempt with just under two minutes left and senior Austin Fuller intercepted a pass on the three-yard line with 36.4 seconds remaining; and

WHEREAS, the extraordinary success of the 2006 Richlands High School football team is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and determination of the players; the leadership of Coach Greg Mance and his staff; and the support of the students and faculty of Richlands High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Richlands High S chool football team on its 2006 Group AA, Division 3 state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Greg Mance as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations for the outstanding performance of the 2006 Richlands Blue Tornadoes.
