2007 SESSION
WHEREAS, John E. Worsley, Sr., a respected citizen and dedicated educator in Northampton County for 38 years, died on February 19, 2006; and
WHEREAS, a native of Tarboro, North Carolina, John Worsley was born on January 5, 1926, the son of Lucy Lewis and George Worsley, Sr., educated in the public schools, and received a bachelor’s degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a master’s degree in administration from the University of Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, John Worsley moved to the Eastern Shore and joined the Northampton County Public Schools, where he served one year as a high school teacher before serving for many years as the beloved principal of two area elementary schools; and
WHEREAS, John Worsley married the love of his life, Juanita Matthews, and the couple had two wonderful sons, John E. Worsley, Jr., and Floyd M. Worsley; and
WHEREAS, a generous community benefactor, John Worsley was a member of the Cosmos Club, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., commander of the Willie T. Brickhouse Post 400 of the American Legion, board member and chairman of the Eastern Shore Area Agency on Aging/Community Action Agency, and member of the board of Shore Memorial Hospital; and
WHEREAS, always concerned with the well-being of his neighbors, John Worsley was a faithful member of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Eastville and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and
WHEREAS, after retiring from Northampton County Public Schools, John Worsley spent many happy hours fishing and preparing his favorite dishes for his friends and family, especially his North Carolina Barbecue; and
WHEREAS, John Worsley will be fondly remembered for his dedication to excellence in education and his great support and mentorship of young people; and
WHEREAS, John Worsley will be greatly missed by his wife, two sons and grandson, and numerous other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine educator, community supporter, and outstanding Virginian, John E. Worsley, Sr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John E. Worsley, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
