HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 647
Requesting the Secretary of Technology, in conjunction with the Virginia Research and Technology Advisory Council, to develop recommendations to enable the networking of and access to nanotechnology instrumentation at Commonwealth institutions of higher education, forming a Nanotechnology Users Network. Report.

WHEREAS, in Virginia, approximately $1 billion in goods incorporating nanotechnology will be manufactured in 2006; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Research and Technology Advisory Council and the Joint Commission on Technology and Science have identified greater collaboration among universities in the field of nanotechnology as essential to providing a skilled workforce for Virginia's growing technology industry; and

WHEREAS, the cost of essential nanotechnology instrumentation and machinery used in research and development is a significant investment for any one of the Commonwealth's universities, especially when use of the instrumentation or machinery may be limited; and

WHEREAS, increased availability and access to nanotechnology instrumentation and machinery will allow undergraduates, graduate students, and research faculty to pursue advanced research projects in fields that utilize nanotechnology; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Secretary of Technology, in conjunction with the Virginia Research and Technology Advisory Council, be requested to develop recommendations to enable the networking of and access to nanotechnology instrumentation at Commonwealth institutions of higher education, forming a Nanotechnology Users Network.

The Secretary of Technology shall submit to the Division of Legislative Automated Systems an executive summary and report of its progress in meeting the requests of this resolution no later than the first day of the 2008 Regular Session of the General Assembly. The executive summary and report shall be submitted for publication as a report document as provided in the procedures of the Division of Legislative Automated Systems for the processing of legislative documents and reports and shall be posted on the General Assembly's website.
